Working after Retirement
The New Jersey Division of Pensions and Benefits released a Certifying Officers letter on August 22, 2014 with updated information on bona fide retirements and post-retirement employment restrictions for service and early retirees. This advisory does not apply to members that have retired under a disability retirement.
The short and sweet of it is: if a member is wishing to return to work for their former employer they must wait 180 days, and if a member is working a different public sector entity, they must wait 30 days.
Please see the Advisory for specifics on how to determine if a retirement is bona fide, pre-arrangement provisions, special provisions for coaches, the employer responsibility, and more! Feel free to circulate the quick-reference chart (page 3), as needed. Also attached is a copy of the employer’s required Notification of Employment after Retirement for your reference.
